A classic mount escape using frames and hip movement to recover half guard.
The bridge and roll (upa) escape from mount traps one of your opponent's arms and their same-side foot, then bridges explosively at a 45-degree angle to roll them over. You end up in their closed guard. It is the first mount escape taught because it demonstrates the power of the bridge — even a smaller person can displace a larger opponent with proper timing and mechanics. The upa works best when combined with hip escape attempts as a one-two escape combination.
Key points
- Frame at the hips and protect the neck line
- Create space before inserting the knee
- Recover in stages rather than forcing full guard immediately
Common mistakes
- Trying to press the opponent off with straight arms
- Shrimping without first establishing frames
- Leaving elbows too wide
Common reactions
- Top player climbs to high mount
- Top player crossfaces to flatten recovery
