A dynamic passing sequence that redirects the legs and circles to side control.
The toreando (bullfighter) pass controls both of your opponent's legs by the pants or ankles, redirects them to one side like a matador, and you dash around to side control. Speed and timing are essential — you must move as you redirect, not after. The toreando is the cornerstone of the speed passing game and is extremely effective against open guard players. It pairs well with leg drags and long-step passes as part of a passing combination system.
Key points
- Control the legs before trying to move around them
- Use lateral movement rather than driving straight in
- Pin the hips as you arrive to prevent guard recovery
Common mistakes
- Trying to sprint around with no leg control
- Standing too upright
- Failing to settle the pass after clearing the legs
Common reactions
- Bottom player follows and recovers guard
- Bottom player inverts or frames to keep distance
