A fundamental leg lock hyperextending the ankle with a figure-four grip.
The straight ankle lock (ashi garami) traps the opponent's foot in your armpit, wraps your arm around the Achilles tendon, and finishes by arching back and driving your hips forward. It is the first leg lock most people learn and is legal at all belt levels in IBJJF competition. While lower-percentage than heel hooks, it teaches the fundamental mechanics of ashi garami control and is a safe entry point into the leg lock game.
